As a rule of New Zealand Immigration, schools require the student to have travel/health insurance, because in case of any eventuality, the school knows who to turn to and you also have security and peace of mind on your trip.

NZ insurance generally works on a reimbursement basis, so you can visit the doctor you want without having to ask your insurance company for approval.
